Book Diary – Denis Johnson: Train Dreams

Train Dreams: A Novella by Denis JohnsonReading this short book is like listening to blues or folk – it’s easy to imagine that Townes Van Zandt might have written this, if he had been a writer of novels instead of songs. The story is simply, but shot through with intricate imagery, it’s moving and funny, the prose sparse and vivid, lyrical and powerful. It shows once again that Denis Johnson is best in his shorter, focused  novels rather than the big and sprawling ones he has been getting most critical acclaim for and it proves him once again as one of the great authors writing today.
